Well, we finally made it. A few weeks ago we finished up all of our finals and wrapped up the crazy semester called the CORE!
The core (first semester at MIT Sloan) has a stigma around here. It is as if everyone has built it up to biblical proportions. In reality, it was very challenging and time consuming, but also a lot of fun. The best part was definitely getting to know our "ocean" members so well. I was in the Indian Ocean (Jai Ho!). I think more than anything, I am going to miss seeing and interacting with my ocean and core team (6 people within the ocean that you work very closely with) every day. You spend so much time together it is unbelievable. We each know all of the good and the annoying parts about each other.... who is knowledgeable in what subject, who talks too much, who always has a funny thing to say, who did what job before Sloan, etc, etc.
We finished up our last final on Wednesday, December 16th for Data, Models, and Decisions, which was (in my opinion) a great class. Maybe that is just the nerd in me who likes numbers and calculations. Plus, we were lucky to have a great professor, Dr. Andreas Schulz. He endeared himself to the class early on in the semester by helping us to focus on thinking through problems with common sense instead of relying on formulas or memorization. When one of my classmates started reciting a formula out of his notes in answer to a question, Dr. Schulz strolled over to him, ripped the page out of the student's notebook, crumpled it up, and threw it in the trash. He then asked the question again, and said "just think it through". It was brilliant.
But I digress. We left the DMD final and headed over to the Cambridge Brewing Co. to begin our Indian Ocean end of core bar crawl. 30+ people came for lunch and beers. Even Dr. Schulz and our TA came, although they had papers to grade so it was water and ginger ale for them.
From there, we continued through the great city of Boston, hopping out of the cold from bar to bar. It was a great experience and a fitting end to the core. The best part is, I celebrated the next day by sleeping in for once...
