Well the first half (H1) of the MIT Sloan semester is already over. It was a busy half semester... I thought this was supposed to get easier after the core! I have 54 credits, which is a full load. One class was marketing, a 9 credit H1 class (usually half semester classes are 6 credits) so that took up a lot of time. Nice to be done with that, hopefully H2 will be a bit smoother. In addition, after being on the waitlist for over a month, I finally got into one of the coolest classes at MIT Sloan, Finance II with a legendary professor, Paul Asquith. I had been attending all the lectures and doing all the homework, hoping I'd get in to this extremely full class. I guess perserverance pays off because I am now in, and learning a ton!
In addition, I have been pretty busy with extra curricular activities. Doing some job recruiting, which can be a big job in itself. I have also been helping to organize the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition (www.mit100k.org), one of the premiere business plan competitions in the US. It is an incredible series of events, and a mammoth effort by the 40+ student volunteers. This year, I will be leading up our initiative to connect with alumni of the competition and get them reengaged. Finally, I have been helping out with a really cool event called IdeaStorm, an event where local entrepreneurs get together and brainstorm about business ideas and issues their startups are facing. This event was started by three of my classmates last fall, and began with about eight of us around a table having a beer. It has now grown massively, with over 100 attendees at each of the last two events, and a great location at the Cambridge Innovation Center (a hotbed for start-ups).
Also, I had a chance to work for a while with a (real) start-up team I met through the MIT $100K Competition. It was a great learning experience and a great compliment to the sometimes too theoretical class work. The company is a social network based around the part time job search, and will hopefully be ready to launch this summer.
Well, the Sloan experience continues to impress me. Now on to a much needed break, and a student led trip to Japan, led by a group of Japanese students from Sloan. I cannot wait. 65 Sloanies taking over Japan... I'll keep you all posted!
