For all the benefits of going to school in your home neighborhood--familiarity with the area, friends and family, business contacts--there may also be a slight draw-back. I'm not worried about brining my worlds together. Many of my soon-to-be classmates are unpacking and getting out the maps of the T, or taking the risk of asking strangers directions to the grocery store. I'm still working on two projects that I've committed to with two organizations in the area. One of these projects is almost done, but the other just increased in scope and pre-term starts tomorrow.
This afternoon my father and I had a talk about preparation. It's been a long time since I was last in school and I've been worried about being a little bit rusty. Nevertheless, my father reminded me that there are many people who will bring their children and spouses worried not just about the academic and social demands of B-school, but also about finding a primary school, winter clothes, and missing home, where ever that may be.
To them, I say, welcome to Boston! Welcome to Cambridge! You'll be fine here. I'm looking forward to meeting you--after these projects are done.
