I wrote this for a prospective student asking about these programs, but I might as well put it out there in case anyone is looking. Let's see if I can explain this the differences between the MIT Sloan international programs: G-Lab is a full semester class with a three week on-site internship afterwards during winter break. Your airfare and hotel are paid by MIT. These are done in teams of four students. I did a project Tanzania for G-Lab, working with a local community based organization. China and India Lab are a separate program that really are like a mini G-Lab. You take 15.225, Economy in China in India with Professor Yasheng Huang, and then you go on a two week internship during SIP and Spring break with a company or non-profit. I went to Guangzhou last year for China Lab to work with a high-end fashion designer. That was done with two Chinese MBAs from Lingnan College in Guangzhou. This year, I did India Lab and went to Delhi to do work for an educational foundation. Both China and India Lab cover your flight and lodging to those places. They also fund you with flight and hotel for a weekend to visit another city during the trip. I went to Hong Kong and Goa. I also did NextLab (Designing Mobile Technologies for the Developing World), which is a class run by the Computer Science department. They are paying my airfare to the Philippines this summer. Treks vary pretty widely. Generally, the students pay the costs of airfare, hotel, etc. Then the trip is a mix of business and pleasure. Student leaders for the trek set up company visits (which are often a lot of fun), networking events and talks to improve our business knowledge of the setting. For the organizers, it's an excuse to call on a lot of really powerful people, often in their country. This year, trek talks included Warren Buffett and the former Prime Minister of India.
