On Tuesday I had the opportunity to have lunch with Marina Hatsopoulos, Founding CEO and investor in Z Corporation (www.zcorp.com), through a class I am taking in H2 called Managing in Adversity. Marina is an MIT aluma who founded Z Corporation based on a 3D Printing technology that she discovered at the MIT Technology Licensing Office. She negotiated the license with the licensing office to found Z Corporation, which develops, manufactures and markets the world's fastest 3D Printers (available in color also, which we learned in class is unique to Z Corporation), machines that produce physical prototypes from CAD and other digital data.
I was curious to learn more about her experience working with the MIT Technology Licensing Office to commercialize a technology developed at MIT, especially since the business plan that I worked on last year was also about commercializing a technology developed at MIT through the MIT Technology Licensing Office. Marina provided some valuable insights and some of the key lessons that she learned in founding and running her business. She also talked about how she dealt with various adverse situations that she faced in her role as a CEO. She was very inspirational and helped me learn more about entrepreneurship, technology (especially about 3D printing) and leadership. I am very lucky to have had the opportunity to have lunch with such an inspirational CEO!
